Native Maine author Jeffrey Ryan will present highlights from his newly-released hardcover book This Land Was Saved for You and Me at the Windham Public Library. “This Land” traces the development of America’s public lands by identifying a series of key generational handoffs — ideas that were nurtured, then grew when conditions called for change. Ryan’s book features many notable names — Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Gifford Pinchot among them — but importantly many lesser-known people whose efforts truly broke new ground by recognizing that America’s resources were not inexhaustible and calling for a means of protecting and managing them before it was too late. Ryan’s appearance comes just after the national book launch for This Land Was Saved for You and Me, which was held at the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s national headquarters. He will have copies of his books available for signing.
