The story of how the Appalachian Trail was created gives us insight into two fascinating men who were driven by startlingly different philosophies and upbringings.

Benton MacKaye came from a family of big thinkers. Yet, unlike some in his family—notably, his father—Benton’s dreams were grounded in observation and measurement. It was MacKaye’s need to understand and articulate how natural and manmade systems worked that spawned the idea for the Appalachian Trail—the backbone of a much larger plan designed to encourage people to move back out of America’s cities to establish working communities in proximity to the great footpath.
